Coastal Compass celebrated its grand opening on Wednesday May 22. It becomes one of only a few one-stop public education workforce destinations in the country. Numerous education and workforce partners in the community have helped to bring this unique concept to life in the Coastal Bend region. This P-16 Council partner program will help guide thousands of individuals to take the next step in their education or career. This is the topic to be explored at next the P-16 Council Leadership Luncheon on April 18 at the Del Mar College Center for Economic Development. The keynote speaker will be Victor B. Saenz, Ph.D., a nationally acclaimed researcher who’s been studying why young men in Texas, especially minority males, fall behind their female counterparts when it comes to high school graduation, post-secondary enrollment, or college completion. Dr. Saenz will present his latest findings and explore how a rapid decline in young male achievement is impacting areas such as Coastal Bend. Several best practices and solutions will also be presented.

There’s a celebration planned on April 17 that marks nearly six years of progress by the region’s state-supported P-16 Council, which has been on a mission to align the region’s educational and workforce stakeholders to improve the quality of life for all citizens. In honor of this progress, the Council will unveil a new name, discuss several upcoming new programs, and give each of five students a $1000 scholarship.

Education to Employment will celebrate the second annual GenTX Day on May 3 by spearheading activities around the Coastal Bend region to support a college and career culture. GenTX Day is a culminating day for the Generation Texas movement created by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB). This year, THECB is asking everyone to ‘Take A Step’ on GenTX Day by supporting college enrollment in individual communities.
